Operation

WARNING: Do not connect the instrument to live voltage.

Calibration procedure
  1. Each time the instrument is turned on, it must be calibrated to equalize the resistance in the test wires.
  2. Turn the Rotary switch [10] from OFF to Ω.
  3. Connect the two Kelvin clips to the included Copper rod, as close together as possible.
Note: Make sure the Copper rod and Kelvin clips are perfectly clean.elma 6501 Cable Length Tester - Calibration procedure 1
  4. Press: CAL key, wait 3 seconds, the display switches between “Yes Icon” and “No Icon” now press the MEM key, when the display shows “Done Icon” for a moment then the calibration is done correctly.elma 6501 Cable Length Tester - Calibration procedure 2

If the display show “Fail Icon” after pressing the MEM key, the calibration has failed.

Check again if there is a correct and good connection and repeat the calibration.

Measuring cable length

WARNING: Do not connect the instrument to live voltage.

Note. For best results, the instrument and cable to be measured should have the same ambient temperature, it will typically take about 30 min

  1. Set the rotary switch [10] from OFF to Ω.
  2. Calibrate the instrument as described in 6.1 Calibration procedure
  3. Set the rotary switch [10] to the wire diameter which corresponds to the wire to be
    measured.
  4. If the cable to be measured is in copper, press the Cu/AL key so that the display shows the
symbol “Cu“, is the cable, in aluminum, then press the Cu/AL key so that the display shows the symbol “AL
  5. Press the FT/M key and choose whether the result should be seen in Feet (ft) or in Meter
    (m)
  6. Clean the ends of the wire to achieve good contact. If necessary, use abrasive paper to
remove oxide layer on each end if necessary.
  7. Connect the 2 alligator clips at each end of the cable.
  8. The display shows the total length of the wire.

elma 6501 Cable Length Tester - Measuring cable length

User-selected cable type
  • You can store up to 8 of your own cable types.
  • The length can then be measured on any conductive cable.
Save the resistance in a cable type of your choice

Note: Prepare a 4-100m [13.1ft-320ft in FEET MODE] Sample length of the wire to be programed into the meter so that the meter can correctly measure the resistance of this sample wire and store it in lengths of the same kind of wire when you want. Make sure the sample wire to be measured is not energized or live.

Accurately measure the length of the reference cable with tape measure or otherwise. In the instrument will then measure the resistance in the reference cable and store this information.

For best results, the instrument and reference cable should have roughly the same ambient temperature, which will typically take about 30 minutes.

Insulate and clean the wire ends of the reference cable to achieve good contact. If necessary, use abrasive paper to remove oxide layer on each end if necessary. The reference cable must not be live.

elma 6501 Cable Length Tester - Save the resistance in a cable type of your choice

Measure the length of custom cable type
  1. Calibrates the instrument as described in 6.1 Calibration procedure.
  2. Insulate the cable to be tested at both ends and make sure that a good contact can be
    made.
  3. With the rotary switch [10], select the position (1-8) that suits the selected type of cable.
  4. Press the FT/M key to choose whether to view the result in Feet or In Meters
  5. Connect alligator clips at both end of the cable.
  6. The display now shows the total length of the custom cable.
Delete memory for a custom cable type
  1. Disconnect all cables on the instrument.
  2. Set the rotary switch [10], select the custom setting (1-8) to be deleted.
    a. If the display displays no in the selected option, the option has not been used. b. The display should show OL before it makes sense to erase the memory of this.
  3. Press the CAL key, the display will switch between no and “Yes Icon“.
  4. Now press the MEM key 2 times and the custom cable type will be deleted.
Measure resistance
  1. Set the rotary switch [10], select the Ω.
  2. Calibrate the instrument as described in 6.1 calibration procedure
  3. For best results, the instrument should have the same ambient temperature.
  4. Make sure that a good contact can be made with the alligator clips, to the object to be measured.
  5. The display now shows the measured resistance
Measure temperature
  1. The internal temperature sensor measures the temperature displayed in the display
  2. If the temperature is less than -5 0C (23 0F), the display shows: -OL
  3. If the temperature is right than 500 0C (122 0F) the display shows: OL
  4. Press and hold the Cu /Al key to choose whether to see the result in °C / °F

Maintenance

This instrument is designed to be reliable for many years if maintained as described here.

  • Always keep the meter dry, if it gets wet wipe, it off.
  • Use and store the meter in normal temperatures, temperature extremes can shorten the life of the electronic parts and distort or melt plastic parts.
  • Handle the instrument with caution, if the instrument is dropped, it may damage the electronic parts of the instrument.
  • Keep the meter clean, wipe the case occasionally with a damp cloth, do not use chemicals, cleaning solvents or detergents.
  • Use only fresh batteries of the recommended size and type, remove old or weak batteries so they do not leak and damage the unit.

Replace the battery

WARNING! Before unscrewing the battery cover, remove the test cords from the circuit and turn off the instrument.

  1. Open the battery cover one that sits below the tilt stand on the back of the instrument by removing the 2 screws with a Phillips screwdriver and lifting the bottom of the battery cover.
  2. Insert 6 new AA (LR6) battery into the battery holder, pay attention to correct polarity.
  3. Replace the battery cover, reattach the 2 screws.
